Town beaches first, island favourites second
The capital is not a beach resort, but it has three beaches that the municipality reported as Blue Flag holders on 11 May 2026: Playa Blanca, Los Pozos and Puerto Lajas. They are practical beaches next to a working town. For a classic beach holiday, most visitors choose Corralejo, Caleta de Fuste or El Cotillo and come to the capital for a flight, a ferry or a cruise stop.
A Blue Flag is an award. It does not promise safe bathing on a given day and it does not mean that lifeguards are always on duty. Read the flag on the beach, ask the lifeguards and keep an eye on children. Fuerteventura is in the Atlantic, and no beach should be assumed to be free of currents.

The beaches of Puerto del Rosario
What the municipality publishes about each of them.
Playa Blanca
The town's beach with a Blue Flag for 2026 and a longer lifeguard period under the new contract. Do not mix it up with Playa Blanca on Lanzarote, which is the arrival port of the Corralejo ferries.
Los Pozos
The central city beach in the bay. The council lists accessible entrances, cleaning, a lifeguard service and water-quality checks. Because a sewage pumping station is nearby, it adds extra checks every 10 days. That is a monitoring measure, not a report of a problem, but it is a reason to look at the flag and any notices on the day.
Puerto Lajas
A coastal village immediately north of the capital, with a beach, a Blue Flag for 2026 and improved access for people with reduced mobility.
Los Molinos
Not a Blue Flag beach in the municipality's 2026 list, but its lifeguard cover now runs for 8 months a year instead of 4. The published notice gives no exact start and end dates or daily hours, so check on site.
Boat trips and beach days from the capital
Snorkelling, catamaran trips and Isla de Lobos, with live prices and availability.
Flags, lifeguards and common sense
The rules are simple, and they apply on every beach.
A red flag means that bathing is prohibited. Follow the instructions of the lifeguards, check the sea and the weather before you swim, do not swim alone and supervise children at all times. Lifeguard duty changed in 2026: the new contract began on 16 April, with longer cover at Playa Blanca and 8 months at Los Molinos, but the published notice gives no daily hours. Look for the lifeguard tower and the flag.
Earlier guidance on seasons is out of date. If an older page says Los Molinos is staffed for 4 months, it predates the new contract.

Beaches beyond the capital
Sheltered, lagoon and open water, as described by the island tourism service.
| Beach area | Setting | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Playa del Castillo, Caleta de Fuste | Bay behind the harbour mole | Light sand and a sheltered position; this does not mean calm or current-free water on every day |
| El Cotillo, lagoons | Small lagoon bays north of the village | Lagoons and water sports spots are separate places; not every beach suits beginners |
| La Concha, El Cotillo | Small bay north of the village | Not the same as La Concha on Isla de Lobos |
| La Concha, Isla de Lobos | Small sandy bay below La Caldera | On the island, so you need the ferry and the visiting permit |
| Dunes of Corralejo | Nature park on the north-east coast | Keep to signed paths; leave the car at a parking area and walk in |
Details for each area are on the pages for Caleta de Fuste, El Cotillo, Corralejo and Isla de Lobos. The lagoons and the surf spots near El Cotillo are separate places, so match the beach to your level.
Naturism
Used in places, but not a blanket rule.
The Spanish tourism portal describes several beaches near El Cotillo as naturist, and the island tourism service mentions nude bathing in the dune park. That shows that it happens, not that every beach on the island allows it. Follow the local signs and keep a respectful distance from other people.

Fuerteventura beaches: frequently asked questions
Which beaches in Puerto del Rosario have a Blue Flag?
Playa Blanca, Los Pozos and Puerto Lajas, reported by the municipality on 11 May 2026. A Blue Flag does not guarantee safe swimming or constant lifeguard presence on the day.
Are there lifeguards on the town beaches?
Yes. A new service started on 16 April 2026, with longer cover at Playa Blanca and 8 months at Los Molinos instead of 4. The published notice gives no exact daily hours, so look for the tower and the flag. See also things to do in town.
What does a red flag mean?
It means that bathing is prohibited. Follow the lifeguards' instructions, check the sea and weather, and do not swim alone.
Is the water at Los Pozos clean?
The council tests the water and adds extra checks every 10 days because of a nearby sewage pumping station. This is a monitoring measure. Check the flag and the notices on the beach on your day.
Where is the sheltered beach?
Playa del Castillo in Caleta de Fuste lies in a bay behind the harbour mole. Sheltered does not mean free of currents. See the Caleta de Fuste page.
Which month is best for the beach?
That depends on what you want. The airport station shows warm, dry summers, but no single month is best. See Fuerteventura weather for the monthly figures.
